Students get fired up by workshop
2009/07/24
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Students participating in the New Straits Times Newspaper-In-Education creative writing workshop here on Wednesday were all fired up in taking up writing more seriously, beyond just scoring good grades in examinations.
Amazed by the tips and tricks learnt at the workshop, the students walked home with dozens of ideas on how to improve their school bulletins and making their personal blog more interesting.SMK Convent Butterworth magazine team Liew Mei Rin and G. Daleni, both in Form Four, described the workshop as an enriching experience.Liew said she learnt how to organise her ideas and transform them into a better write-up while Daleni said the caption-writing session was an interesting topic."It gave us the whole idea of how to write a short but good caption that best describes each picture," Daleni said.
For the SMK(A) Al-Irshad magazine team, Nur Syazadiyanah Suriani and Aliaa Shafinas Mohd Don, their earlier impression that the workshop would be just another dull academic-laden session was totally skewed.
"We had a great time from the moment the workshop started and we ended up with loads of tips on how to improve our writing for the school newsletter," Aliaa Shafinas said.
V. Vishni of SMK Taman Inderawasih, who wishes to be in the school's magazine board next year said the workshop was a great exposure.SMK Dato' Onn Form Four student Kalvinder Singh, who is also an active blogger said he was happy to learn how to be a better writer. His teacher Saw Cheng Siew said the workshop was challenging and interesting for the students and the teachers.
"It is a very educational session and the students get to learn things that they do not learn every day in school."Sekolah Menengah Sains Tun Syed Sheikh Shahabuddin (SMSTSSS) English teacher Mohd Amir Shaukhi Ahmad proposed the workshop be extended for another two days.
More than 100 students from 13 secondary schools on the mainland took part in the second workshop in the state held at SMSTSSS.
