Life's a journey - where are you heading to?

Saturday, March 2, 2024

You know how people say life's a journey, not a race? Had a lil bit of reflection with my baby (read: 24 year-old) brother the other day and thought - living a purposeful life is like going on a journey with a set destination.

Say, his trip coming home from Japan to Malaysia, for example. You know your final destination is Malaysia, so do your due diligence - buy a ticket to Malaysia lah, bukan USA bukan Madagascar.

This is one of the first few steps that we have to make. Some people will find it easier to take the first step and some will struggle. We may find that there'll be many options to the same destination. There'll be direct flights, some will take longer with transits, some are flying soon, some will fly later. Ask ourselves - Which one suits our current situation best?

Know where you are and where you want to go to, buy your ticket and get ready to depart.

I once waited at the wrong gate because I was sleepy and wasn't aware of the change. Until I realised most people were speaking in another accent and decided to ask.

You see, even from the start - getting from where you are to the airport pun, we have to check our reality and do our part accordingly. The keyword here is "do", tapi bukanlah membabi buta just do it. Ada masa along the journey boleh redah, ada masa kena teliti.

Kalau ada cita-cita tapi tak ada usaha pun samalah macam berangan nak pergi mana-mana tapi tiketnya tak beli sampai ke sudah.
Duk refreshlahh booking page tu. Dah beli tapi sengaja tak naik tu satu hal juga.

Sampai hari nak bertolak, sometimes everything goes smoothly just as planned but sometimes there will be delays. And that's okay. Some people will have the privilege to access a comfy little lounge, some (or most) will not. Either way, we know that the delay is temporary and we'll just have to be alert with the new timing, whether we're the one resting in a lounge or tidur atas kerusi. Because remember - you have a destination to go to! You have a plane to catch.

And most of the times - if not ALL, the waiting is necessary. It's not always about us who need to be ready, the aircraft also must be fit to fly, then there's the weather too. We don't want to rush flying through a heavy storm, risking our safety, don't we?

"But ... What makes you so confident that hopping on that plane will get you to where you want to go?"

Because of trust, no? We trust that we've bought the right ticket, we trust that everyone else is also doing their part to make sure we get to where we want to go; be it the ground staff or the flying crew. We especially trust the pilot too, no?

We don't need to worry if they will come to work that day, do we? Do we go and check setiap pilot punya lesen? Do we go and question kenapa naik this aircraft and not the other? Do we complain kenapa this gate is so far away, tak boleh ke kita duduk mana2 gate nanti kapal tu mai lah ambik kita? Those are like the voices in our head yang sebenarnya tak membantu pun.

We trust wholeheartedly when they say the plane is ready. Itu manusia, strangers, that we are trusting, inikan pula Tuhan sekalian alam.

When it's time to fly, you will eventually.

We can - not that we have to - think of the worst case scenario, but only to allow ourselves to at least be prepared for it. In this case - missing our flight. What can we do to avoid it? Make sure we have all the documents (be prepared), arrive on time (set a timeline), head to the right gate (make the right choices) etc.

But what if you have done all the right things and you still miss your flight? Accident on the way, sakit perut, tercicir IC ke apa ke...

These are all possible hurdles that can happen to us, but does that mean the world is over? No. For all we know, the flight we missed was for our own good. Yes, of course we will feel frustrated at first but when and if that happens, we will be forced to reassess our situation to decide on the next steps.

Are we rerouting (maybe we need to set a new goal) or are we retreating (find other ways, maybe not today but we will fly later to the same destination)? Kita takkan selamanya nak stuck dalam airport tu kan. (I once shared about the airport being a liminal space, it's only as a means for transit. Samalah macam this dunia being a liminal space before our final destination to the akhirah).

Begitulah analoginya. Ada destinasi nak dituju, ada matlamat dalam hidup.

And to fly forward, there are things you must bring, and some you must leave behind.

So along this journey - where are you now and where are you heading to? How are you getting there? Who are you putting your utmost trust in? Who'll be with you along the way?

What essentials are we bringing? - carry on berapa kilo je boleh, check-in baggage pun ada limit lol. Kaya macam mana sekalipun we can never bring our whole house with us, metaphorically and literally.

As we head to our destination, focus on getting there, enjoy the journey. Good or bad it's all temporary until we get there.

Focus on the things within our locus of control. The rest we let go, and let God. Moga Allah redha, dan moga Allah permudahkan. Amin.

---
Life is a long journey, we will surely have people around us - they come and go - but Allah alone is sufficient for us and Allah is the best disposer of affairs, the best Guardian.

`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler."

Plan and be prepared, travel light and leave extra baggage - physically and mentally - meet new people and learn new things, enjoy the moment yet get ready to say goodbye and move forward until you reach your final destination.

As always.
Moga Allah halakan ke arah yang baik-baik, dan kita dipertemukan dengan orang yang baik-baik sepanjang perjalanan. Amin.

Do you get butterflies?

Sunday, February 13, 2022

Haritu jumpa Adilla. Her husband, now my colleague, Hazman is the one and only guy in our core team. We had Adilla over not really sebab kesiankan Hazman, tapi sebab lagi berempati dengan Adilla Yang ditinggalkan keseorangan as we had our retreat week.
As we were catching up, we talked about our failed plan to matchmake Along. They looked so good together, but the sister rasa she wouldn't be able to bear long distance.

""Awak carikan untuk kita pulaklah..!" I said, half-jokingly.
"Susahlah awakk. Nak cari orang baik. Ada sorang tu tengah cari, tapi ... Tak yahlah dia. Awak nak orang macam mana?"
I proceeded to tell Adilla my two big fat crushes I had. One dah selamat berkeluarga kecil, one just ... Out of radar..
"The first thing that came to my mind from the kind of people you're attracted to, is that you're looking for someone like yourself. You are comfortable with yourself."
Actually that was what Zing once told me. "I think you're not looking for someone opposite to complement you, you are subconsciouly looking for a companion."
Why are my friends so good at this??!

Adilla suggested many ways I can start a conversation, "Awak sangat sensitif, I know you know it when someone is trying to hit on you! I'm sure you noticed all the little things, you just didn't want to take action, Syaza!"
Itulah. I have my own doubts and insecurities.

Adilla also said "Be you, Syaza. Joke around like you always do." Because according to Adilla it is easy for people to paint a serious picture of me as their first impression, but people who got to know me a bit deeper will know for sure I am not that serious all the time.
People tend to put me on a pedestal, "Syaza the Great" ... and that makes me uncomfortable. At the same time, I also don't want people to look down on me. "You want someone equal."

Yes. Someone who knows the foolish side of me, someone who knows my drama, someone who I could talk random stuff to. Someone I admire and have my respect for.

"Awak. You are comfortable with yourself, you are well-read and you have always been very open, very different mindset, dari sekolah lagi. Forget about all that list, I think now you just need someone that struck your heart, AND THEN YOU MAKE A MOVE."
Why does she make it sound so easyyyy.

One thing tho.
I told her about the two.
I didn't get to tell her about you.

I do tell my friends about you, with joy and proud to have a friend such as you.
We've been good friends and I guess as time passes, we're going our separate ways.
Each, hopefully, excelling in the things we want to excel in.
We've been good friends and I don't want to lose a friend ever again.
You might not know it, but all this while I do get butterflies when I see you/your name. Do you, though?

Abe Parker - Butterflies
How do I tell you I need you
When you steal the breath in my lungs?
My body shakes 'til the blood in my face
Makes me awkward, smile, and turn around
How do I hold these emotions
When you spin my world out of place?
One look at me, it feels like everything
Is written marker on my face
I'm hopin' maybe you can tell me now
Am I the only one that's catchin' butterflies?
Am I a moth in your flame?
Do you burn the same when I
Look in your eyes?
Do you get butterflies?
Butterflies
Don't know what I'd do without you
And that's why you're not here in my arms
I'm so scared to lose what we already have
Askin' for everything that I want
'Cause maybe I raised all your red flags
And these green lights are just in my head
I swear that there's something we both can't explain
And I'm terrified to lose it
I'm hopin' maybe you can tell me now
Am I the only one that's catchin' butterflies?
Am I a moth in your flame?
Do you burn the same when I...
Hopin' maybe you can tell me now
Am I the only one that's catchin' butterflies?
Am I a moth in your flame?
Do you burn the same when I
Look in your eyes?
Look in my eyes
Do you get butterflies?

The calm in the chaos

Saturday, December 11, 2021

"You're so calm," kata kebanyakan orang.
Terutama dalam situasi tegang dan penuh amarah.

As a student bertekak dengan lecturer, dengan top management, even dkt IPG kahkah, as a designer when people keep amending, as a cikgu to a point my LDO said "You were like the calm in the chaos" when she was observing my lesson, or when my laptop went blank during a live session, pernah juga dgn pakcik lori yang trying to intimidate me lepas dia langgar kita... even my wan said "Kau kan sabar dengan budak." You get it lah. In situations where anger is expected, I seem to not be bothered.

I often just respond with a smile and agree with it when I really am not and I don't understand how/why people would see me that way.

Had a conversation earlier today where I learned that I was indeed, at that moment, feeling angry - like I was being provoked, or annoyed that things didn't go the way I planned, frustrated that I wasn't able to provide answers, skeptical and disappointed of the answers I heard, I was being protective so I wouldn't hurt anyone including myself - but people seeing me differently doesn't invalidate the storm inside.

I remember Aina used to say it could be because of my deep, sometimes monotonous, voice lol. Not that emotionless afterall ey. Haha

Never ready.

Everyday I look at my parents, and I just can't bear to lose them. Yes I know umur bukan penentu, in fact siapa-siapa saja boleh pergi dulu.

Tapi I know I will be deeply affected. Yang pergi menjauh pun sudah separuh gila, yang pergi selama-lamanya apatah lagi.

No matter how prepared we think we are, when the time comes we will always be taken aback, no?

Allah.

Hidupkan kami dalam iman.

Matikan kami dalam iman.

Masukkan kami ke syurgamu dengan iman.

Aren't you being unfair to yourself?

Kalau ikut kalendar Hijr, I am 29 years old. Meniti hari demi hari nak jejak usia 30an.

I still have one more year ikut kalendar Gregori...Gregorian?

Looking back, I started blogging when I was in Primary. Masa tu ejaan pun tunggang langgang, grammar pun ke laut.

Sekarang pun macam masih ke laut. Tapi mungkin berpelampung. Rojak masih rojak.

Random, semestinya.

Nowadays I find things that I don't really want to, or feel safe to, share on my IG ke apa... I come back to this blog.. sobs am I taking you for granted, my blog?

I honestly do not know if anyone is reading this blog eh. But if you are here, thank you.

Hmm. Ceritanya...

Haritu our CEO signed me up for a coaching session, for 5 months. I thought that it was a professional coaching punya tapi turns out it was a life coaching ahah

Dipendekkan cerita, ada satu session I had to evaluate where I am at the moment in terms of family, friends, career and studies, health, life partner etc.

I rated myself quite high for most of the things except for 2 - "health" and "life partner" ahahah yang paling takde progress i tell you.

Sekali my coach asked me in depth pula...

For health, it's basically my volatile weight lah, turun naik mendadak, and often unintended. I mean I could lose 10kg in a year, or up to 30kg without the intention and before I know it, I would regain all the lost kilos and sometimes even more in a blink of an eye. Tak pernahnya nak ada betul-betul inner motivation untuk conscious eating. Eh pernahlah sekali. My period was irregular and I noticed only if jaga makan and all, baru ok balik the cycle. I asked ustazah and ustazah ckp, since I know that cause, jadi mcm amanah dan tanggungjawablah for me to lose some weight. And so I did. Tapi tulah bila lepas tu cycle dah ok, byebye diet haha

So I told this to my coach. Ok. Kita letak tepi dulu. We'll come back to my weight story.

Then she asked if I have ever been in a relationship.

Nope, not even once.

And she asked if anyone ever approached me.

Haha I don't think so. I added, if I felt like someone is probably approaching to be more than a friend, I would quickly brush it off and tell myself, there's no way that is the case.

Kemudian, soalannya if I ever approached someone.

Hah! Gaaa mungkin. I told her maybe because... I don't know, the idea of having someone to spend the rest of your life with, is scary to me. Yikes. And I feel dengan kerjanya, dengan belajarnya, maybe I don't have the time and space to let someone in.

Maka my coach asked,

"What makes you think being in a relationship will make you less productive? What makes you think it won't push you forward?"

Adusshh.. and that got me thinking. Benar. I am shutting the door mungkin sebab takut kacau my life plans ahaha

She asked if I ever thought about friends, if not someone new?

Katanya, just think of my group of close friends - we became close because we managed to let each other in. Why not I let down my guard with any potential life partner among my existing friends, she suggested.

Huish. Selain "Like... siapa??" Hm. Wait. Kalau ya pun, that thought actually also scares me, risking a friendship. But I also don't think I wanna marry a stranger.

And then she proceeds to connecting the dots.

1. I brush it off whenever someone tries to get closer.

2. I do not try to get closer to anyone.

"Syaza," she said. "You are a very nice person. From our previous sessions, I can tell how you are very understanding and have high empathy for other people. You are able to hold your judgment, but I would like to ask you, Syaza.."

Dup dap

"When it comes to this matter, aren't you being unfair to the other person? Did you not somehow prejudge that this person would not be a good life partner that you want to be with? And Syaza, aren't you also judging yourself that you are not capable of accepting love from other people? By doing that, aren't you being unfair to yourself?"

Mashalla.

Terdiam gwe.

And it really got me thinking...maybe she is right.

TAPI MANA MAU CARI.

My workplace semua perempuan. Huhu.

...

Selingan

Masa fellowship pun, Aizat dgn Hazwan sll kenenkan Fashah sebab single, tapi Fashah cakap "Korang sibuk cari untuk aku, Syaza pun single!" Then I remember Aizat jawab,

"Syaza aku tak risau sangat, nanti adalah tu. Skrg ni dia pun takde vibe tengah mencari."

Hahaha cemano.

...

Before the end of the session, Clara asked me to give myself a chance, and do something as my task before our next call. Which led me to...... *drum rolls* signing up for an online dating site.

Gaaaah most awkward phase of my life.

"Caje, hang ni sampai jadi task baru nak buat." Aina.

Haha itulah tu.

But the plus side of it, sebab kena tulis pasal diri sendiri dan ciri pasangan yang nak dicari *cringe*

I am at least a bit clearer lah of myself and who am I looking for.

Cuma, I don't think meeting and getting to know someone new, online is for me.

 It's...just...awkward.

Tapi nak jumpa orang baru pun, COVID pulak 🤣

Our final session, my coach said this to me,

"You must be found, Syaza. I may be wrong, but this is what I think: You are uncomfortable with the spotlight and you thought gaining weight was the easiest way to hide yourself from other people." CL, 2021. Spot on.

It was freaky sebab that was indeed what my 14yo self thought, that by being physically unattractive, I would avoid having to deal with relationship problems during my school years. But it went on until today. Demit all these life coaches digging into your past. Ahah

Ntahlah nak. I told my mum maybe at the age of 35 I will actively search for a life partner. It may come sooner or later than 35 okay' i'm okay, but for now maybe for myself to make an active and voluntary move, 35. Of courselah kena berleter ahaha

Hm.

Itu jelah. Sekadar tengiang-ngiang.

Am I not giving anyone the chance to get to know me? Pfft, is there even anyone trying to get to know me.

Am I not giving myself a chance?

Am I being unfair to myself?

How would I live without you?

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

I was on a call with Aliaa, my best friend since high school.

We talked for hours and hours and hours and Aliaa ended the topic with

"Caje, thank you so much.
How would I live without you?"

Tersentak.

"No, Aliaa please don't say that."

"I'm serious...how ca..."

"...please don't, Aliaa. It reminds me of someone who said the same thing once."

Someone who said they owe me their life.

Someone I thought would stay.

And they didn't.

It's not the person I am trying to forget, that is impossible.

I just don't want to be reminded of the heartache.

I can't bear the same kind of pain anymore. I know some people are not meant to stay forever although I do hope they would, but at least if they have never said that, I think I would be more accepting of it... if it were to happen again.

That wasn't the first time someone said it and I would feel the immediate reflex to dodge the phrase. Kinda sad that this is also indirectly affecting my relationship with other people. Am I that traumatised, even my own best friend could not say it.

"I'm sorry, Caje. Ok let me put it this way. I really appreciate your existence, your insight, in this. Please know that I am really thankful for the time you spent wih me tonight, I really love you and I am very grateful to Allah for that."

---

It has been years. This heart should have healed, or so I thought.

Even just hearing their name made my heart skip a beat.

Allahu yusahhil alaina.
Allahul musta'an.
Allahu ya ghaffur.
Allahu ya latif.

What kind of person do you look for?

Sunday, August 9, 2020

Orang sekeliling selalu tanya,
"What kind of person do you look for...? Meh nak tolong carikan."
Sometimes I simply say...
"I don't know."
Sometimes,
"Someone like my Abah."

I'm looking for someone who is able to keep the balance, in almost everything.
Even if not, will always try to.

Someone who is...
Clear of what they want to achieve in life, and why they do it.
Someone who...
Works hard to get where they want in life, but knows when to take a rest.
Someone who...
Listens attentively to stories and dreams of people around them.
And their eyes lit up just as intense when it's their turn to talk about their passion.

Someone who is...
Very knowledgeable but believes there is always something new to learn everyday,
Someone who remains very humble and always wants to go for the knowledge.

Someone who would...
Challenge views - flip a coin, and it's an exciting conversation where we could go on and on!
Someone who is...
Firm in what they believe in, but always open to exchanges and discussions.

Someone with a heart so sensitive to the emotions in their surrounding, able to empathise with others but at the same time motivate and push someone else to keep their chins up.

Someone who is...
Vulnerable to share their feelings but not easy to break down in adversity.

Someone who could inspire people around them by being who they are.

Someone who is careful in their words and thoughtful in their actions.

Someone who is always looking on the bright side but embraces loneliness and darkness when necessary.

Someone who is always grateful for what they have, and appreciates the little things in life.

Someone who is contented with what Allah gives, but not complacent for they believe in what Allah is possible to reward His creations with.

Someone who when they have more, give more.

Someone who has ultimate faith in The Almighty as the Best of Planners, but tie their camels too.

Someone who tries to be a better version of themselves every day, in every aspect of themselves.

I'm not looking for someone who seems like the best in a room full of people,
but someone who, no matter what, will always try their best to keep moving.

...
I wrote this as a list of what I look for in someone.
Perhaps this is what I shall be working on too myself.

My duaa is that while I work on myself, I would find someone who'd share the same aspiration.

Amin.

My duaa after watching the Final Table,
especially after the Sea Urchin episode of "reaching out" to the treasure:

O Allah please grant me a Charles Michel

I see a piece of you in all of my friends

You didn't wanna know me
Said you didn't wanna know me
But you hide behind the lies
You're in disguise, I can't describe
The feeling when I said to you
Do you remember what I said to you?
You said you wanted to hang out for coffee
But you didn't even reply
I'm not even worth it am I?

[Pre-Chorus]
Deep down when no one's around
You've got a heart of gold
Where is it now?
I don't have another way to get to you

[Chorus]
Charlotte, I see a piece of you in all of my friends
It's over now so why am I still thinking back
To all the times when all we did was laugh and cry for hours
You let me down
So Charlotte, would you still care
If you knew I was hurting?
I miss my friend, it's like I'm missing
Parts of me I didn't know
And now I've got to let them go
But I, I just wanna know if you're still fine

[Verse 2]
I kinda miss your family
Your dad was always there for me
He drove us anywhere we wanna
Singing songs like karaoke
But that was six years ago
Where did all the time go?
I wonder if you've changed your hair
Do you still live a stop from mine
Maybe it's a matter of time

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause deep down when no one's around
You've got a heart of gold
Where is it now?
I don't have another way to get to you

[Chorus]
Charlotte, I see a piece of you in all of my friends
It's over now so why am I still thinking back
To all the times when all we did was laugh and cry for hours
You let me down
So Charlotte, would you still care
If you knew I was hurting?
I miss my friend, it's like I'm missing
Parts of me I didn't know
And now I've got to let them go
But I, I just wanna know if you're still fine

[Bridge]
I just wanna know if you're still fine
I just wanna know if you're still fine
'Cause if not, I'm there in a hurry
You moved on but you're part of my story
Everything is coming back to me now
Thought I'd be there when you marry
Does your therapist know about me?
'Cause mine does, mine does

[Outro]
Charlotte, would you still care
If you knew I was hurting?
I miss my friend, it's like I'm missing
Parts of me I didn't know
And now I've got to let them go
But I, I just wanna know if you're still fine

2020 is an interesting year.
I was offered another new adventure after my teaching fellowship.
Wonderful people, great atmosphere.

2020 is also the year everyone was forced to stay inside.
Being a hermit I never thought it would be a problem for me.
I can stay inside for months if I want to. Perhaps, it's the feeling of 'not being allowed to go out' that's suffocating.

Also,
Quarantine is making me miss the people I thought I've let go of.

Allahuyusahhil.

Talking to the moon
Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon?

31st January 2018. Super Blue Blood Moon phenomenon.

You would like this too kan?

--
Abah would always be excited when there's an eclipse.
"Aja tengok gerhana tak?"
"Mm. Lepas maghrib kan?"
"Abah dialisis malam ni."

Cried a little, inside. T.T

Abah's dialysis is scheduled 3 times a week, 4 hours per session.

Memori Tiga Pagi

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

I drove to Shah Alam the other day. It felt weird. One, that was my first time driving alone, hujan lebat, malam-malam, dkt tetengah Shah Alam.
Two, one I only realised later. The nostalgia.

"Ooh, I've been here before lah..We had a sleepover sekali!"

--
"..That reminds me, did you get back in contact?"
"Eh?" Terkejut jap. "Why did you ask?"
"Nothing, you just mentioned earlier.. Did it still bother you..?"
Tarik nafas. Lepas.
I would never say bother, but how do you truly let go of someone you care about?

---
I thought about bumping into you but I also thought of how would we react if we did?
Is it gonna be a tight hug?
Is it gonna be a short warm meet up?
Or are we going to just nod and smile at each other?
Or are we going to... simply pass by one another?

And I remember you said you'd like to let people be if you were to bumped into them. Maybe that what I should do too.

--
I thought I've completely accepted the fact that I might not gonna see your name on my screen, ever again.
This emptiness at 3am is telling me I thought wrong.

---
They say the only way to heal is to not touch the wound.
I don't know if just letting it heal while knowing the wound comes from a huge rip-out, would help.
:/

That time I'm feelin... Generous

Tuesday, September 26, 2017

Semalam nak hantar mak pi teman abah dialysis.
On the way ada Pesta Orkid (and other pokok bunga). Mak tengah duk menanam macam-macam jenis bunga ros, Sabar Roses collection katanya. Terapi mawar.

"Japgi berhenti singgah jap, mak nak beli ros siam. Tempat bunga mak ada kosong lagi." Hahah okay mem.

Teringat two of my previous clients, both of them nampak muda lagi, and diorg belanja parents utk renovate rumah dan tempah kitchen cabinet berpuluh ribu. Fiuhh, cek tak(belum) mampuuu lgi. And they are both single ladies in their late 20s early 30s.

And since pagi tu baru lepas belanja orang, why not malam ni belanja mak.... "Mak pilihlah mana nak, Aja..belanja, ni je mampu ahahah"

Balik mak was so happy dapat bunga ros purple dan oren.
"Tengkiuu." like a child getting new toys.

On the way ke hospital, dalam kereta, tiba-tiba mak cakap
"Haritu mak nampak ada sorang tu dia ckp dkt anak dia, "Habislah duit ibuuu. Habislahhh.""

Awh mummy's saying she's happy kita belanja dia. Huhuh padahal berapa ringgit je pun.

--
Harini kena hantar atok pi klinik kesihatan, biasanya Along yang pi. (I really don't like pi bank, pi klinik yang bersistem-sistem nak kena go through lepas meja ni ke meja tu then ke bilik ni and all that).
Sarung skirt over my kain batik, sweater over my short sleeves. Mcm biasa. Selekeh.

Habis session, it was still so early in the morning, lapaq and I got (less than) "twenty 'ringgit' in my pocckett" 🎶 ajaklah atok pi makan capati..
"Wan dah makan ke tok?"
"Takpalah bungkuih bg kat wan hang sama, dua keping roti canai.." Oraitt. No problemmmm. Oh teh dan air suam.

Then mak whatsapp;
"Sebelum balik nnt tlg belikan nasi lemak.." Alamak, bajet pagi ni lari.
"Roti canai nak tak?"
"Bolehlah kalau nak beli." *set dalam kepala at least RM10. Or maybe more. Takpalah, cukup, cukup.*

Tetiba atok bangun pi tgk lauk untuk makan tengahari... Atok mcm tak minat,
"Sebelah ni ada kedai lauk gak," I suggested. Lupa padahal ada berapa ringgit je lg.
"Takpa, duk makan capati dulu. Satgi kita pi tengok."

Bayar.
"RM6.50"
"Eh? Dah masuk sekali semua?" I don't know kira macam mana but okayy so ada bajet lebih untuk ke kedai sebelah.
I saw RM10 so if it's less than RM10 we're all good.

Pi kedai sebelah.
Atok tgk mcm nak semua lauk. Panas-panas lagi semua.
(in a failed penang dialect)
"Ha bolehlah."

Tetiba org kedai bwk keluo satu periuk baru sudah masak. "Asam pedaih ikan pari mau dak? Asam pedaih melaka." Atodddiaa.
"Bolehlah." Atok. Mmg kena tinggal fon ni 😂😂😂

Kenapa nak jadi cikgu pulak?

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

"Kenapa nak jadi cikgu pulak?" Now I know why TFM fellows often write lengthy essays to validate their reasons to join, people are asking and disbelieving indeed.

I think I've said it once on this blog, I used to not want to be a teacher, not in any ways trying to degrade teachers, not at all, but because I look at it as a noble profession, I did not feel like I would be good enough as a teacher. I doubted my ability to teach. But as I grow, I find the need to push myself forward and this seems to be one of the ways.

---

A couple of months before resigning and off to a new working life. InsyaAllah, if everything went well. A few stages passed and a few more to go. After a Rancangan Orientasi Sekolah where we'll be shadowing our respective fellowship ambassador, we'll have two-months Pre-service Programme before reporting in, for the next two-year school session.

That being said, I'll be taking a break from the 'design working world' and dive into the teaching profession. This is not something I do baselessly. I have discussed with people around me, myself(?), my parents, my friends, my teachers and lecturers, my current employer, and I end up fortifying a few (a lot of) reasons why I'm doing this and I can even categorise which one to answer to specific people.. leuls. And thus, no I am not withdrawing from the design life. In fact, I am trying to delve even deeper into it. It's a different road, yes, but it still is a way towards it.

Personal motivation: To at least give something back to the society while at the same time developing myself in something other than design, BEFORE continuing to go after my personal pursuit in my career and education development, in interior design.

In a lot of things, I had always wanted to stay behind the scene, but most of the time I still got pushed to the front line, and forced (or I myself felt obliged) to lead something. This time around, I'm taking this as my very own voluntary step forward to (learn how to) lead.

"Go for the knowledge" is something I chant all the time, my mantera. Now it's time to spread the agenda. I'll have an audience for a start: my students. Buuut it is up to me to engage with them first. Please make du'aa.

Interior design basis:
"The improvement of environment through interior design is NOT ONLY aesthetics but also functionality and productivity." My focus in design had always been on the multisensory interior, specifically in the learning environment. I can, if I want to, just enrol in a post-graduate school and research on 'the best design approach for students', but I choose to get first-hand experience: BE IN THE SCHOOL. It definitely won't be a direct effect, an immediate impact, I know. "Oh I have done a research now I want to present the best school design proposal and get it applied in Malaysia." No. The building programme for Malaysian schools are administered by the Ministry of Education, I know my voice is gonna be like a whisper, but at least I'll have this opportunity to understand better and to eventually try and get my idea across.

In fact, however grandeur or sophisticated the building design is, it will remain a soulless architecture, if the environmental effect is not achieved. And I believe one of the ways to it is through education - an active interaction of human beings at a setting, a two-way process of teaching and learning, of teachers and learners where sometimes the teachers are the learners instead and the students are the one offering something to teach, beyond the academic value.

And hopefully with my one foot stepped into the education world, I'll be given a chance to spark a change.

I am writing this down as a motivation.. if I ever feel like giving up along the way.

Tiba tiba masuk kelas...

This is another one of the notes I wrote earlier. I write things dekat handphone sbb tak sempat bukak blogger. Hahah.

Gambar: Design showroom tingkat atas. Sampai ke sudah tak siap-siap lagi.

--
Harini ada org walk-in showroom. Tanya pasal hood dan racking..... Kemudian jadi lecture panjang sampai sejam..... There are some points I agree with and some that I do not. But since beliau orang lama, I just listened more.

INCOME, AND INCREMENT
"You kerja sini, ada buat freelance tak?"
"Adalah kadang-kadang."

Beliau ulang pasal income RM1500 dkt kampung memadai, and yes RM3300 miskin bandar dekat KL, tahap layak mintak zakat. He told about his friend yg kerja tetap RM4.5k, freelancing RM4k. I personally don't like talking about money when it comes to the intention of us working, but he insisted on making sure students these days are equipped with entrepreneurial skill upon graduation. I admit I suck at that.

PERCEPTION
I have had people asking me if I'm working part time as they don't seem to agree with the place I am working at right now, as I 'seemed to deserve something better'. Sebab 'kerja dekat dengan rumah' sounds like a joke. I do not mind at all, why should you? But unlike other people of his age, this man told me it's good to start at this kind of place. "They let you do everything, dari akaun ke tax invoice ke cuci cuci jamban sekalipun, they instill trust in you. If you start dkt company besar and you are given one task, say, technical, sampai ke tua lah you buat benda tu unless you berjaya highlight your management capability and improve your skill. Mcm mana org skrg buat? Open university, online university. Sad."

Well, I don't see a problem sebenarnya.. tapi takpelah.

WILLINGNESS
Beliau cakap pasal nak buat sesuatu kena ada hati. Beliau tak setuju grad 3.6 civil engineering tapi buat cosmetic business instead. He said why waste your time doing something you cant make money out of it in the future?

I do not agree since I am a firm believer that knowledge will always have value and time is never wasted even if you don't end up in the field.

Even joining TFM, some people go
"Oh sayangnya bukan bidang.."
"Laaa. Kenapa macam tu??"

For those I do not feel like explaining, I will just say "JPA panggil untuk habiskan kontrak", end of discussion.

INTERIOR DRAWING AND RENDERING
"You buat 3D? I akan avoid. I pernah buat aquarium siap air, ikan, lampu semua. Walaupun kita tulis this is just for visualisation, bila dah siap client akan tanya "MANA IKANNYA?" Hahah

"You ada knowledge on measurement, jadi I rasa drawing you tak ada masalah. Ni ada student I yang main hentam je measurement dalam drawing asal dia nampak macam lawa. Kita yang dah lama ni, zapp terus boleh detect mana salah."

I told him about how some clients insist on us doing exactly as they want.
"You ingat ni, dalam interior, CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG. You have to show them what they did not expect."

I told him how my bosses are always in a state "Oh you're right, didn't think of that" when I started asking questions. How they said they always never cared.
"Because they are business-minded. Asal dapat duit, we do what they want. But you as someone with knowledge, tell them what they might not realise."

He said he used to work with international companies.
"Drawing ni ada dua jenis: TECHNICAL dan PRESENTATION.
Interior, kita lebih dekat dengan client, so we had a lot of presentation to them. Yg duduk depan you siapa? Accountant, Manager, yang tak ada design background. Anak2 muda sekarang sibuk pakai macam2 software, nampak canggih tapi tak dapat reach audience. Kami orang lama guna powerpoint je, tarik arrow je show this and that. Know your audience."

I told him how I can resonate, when my first few technical drawing couldn't be understood by those in the production team. I did like how I was taught in school, segala dotted line for hidden objects dan symbols for elevation door swing. We dont share the same frequency. I learned their way to be well understood.

He also asked if I know as-built drawings... He said it is very important for the designer to know the little details. OHH AND HE ASKED HOW MANY YEARS WE SPENT LEARNING ABOUT DRAWING IN UNI? "You banyak explore sendiri kan, bukan lecturer ajar kan?" I'm telling you dalam 200 orang graduates, 2 orang je betul capable drawing. You guys had too many things. Kawad lah apa lah." (I told him yg uia got no compulsory kawad thing, we very direct pipol liddat)

"You buat rendering? TAK PAYAHH, BUANG MASA. I as boss nak tgk first idea je, kalau lambat sgt nak attach file, hah snap je lah pakai phone. Nak tgk view je, then we start the discussion from there." I don't mind sebenarnya, it is one of the skills we can learn and improve, why not. Although, I am not much of a super photorealistic rendering (the one yg dengan karat-karat, taik cicak sume nak indicate), to me you leave the realistic aspect when it's finished, when it is .... realised? I find it time-consuming because at the end of the day it is almost impossible to get something EXACTLY the same as your rendering. I would like to focus more on the rough idea, the design. Nonetheless, I still regard it as an invaluable skill, go for it if you like it.

Em. Banyaklah sebenarnya beliau bebelkan, tapi macam berterabur sini situ sikit. Fiuh

Beliau akhiri dengan mintak contact number dan cakap "Kalau I ada benda nak you buat nnt, I contact you. Benda2 simple je. Tak sampai 15min you boleh buat. RM20-RM30 utk benda kecik, kumpul 10 kali, dah boleh dapat RM2-3ratus." baru nak cakap cuti Ahad je tkut tak ada masa dia sambung "budak sekarang manja, bila anak I kata dia busy, ok tell me, list down the things you are so busy of..".............. K.

Bila beliau ckp contoh dia nak suruh visualise meja study, I felt so reluctant. I thought of how I would be doing a detailed meja study with aluminum handle, drawer dengan kunci, papan keyboard dgn railing, skirting meja segala. It would take me hours to perfect it. When he showed me the drawing did by one of his outsource, yup. Tahap buat 15min je.

PROBLEM SOLVING
"You belajar addmath, you rasa ada kegunaan tak dalam hidup?" I know he wanted me to say no ahha but I just smiled I didnt wanna say no sbb mmg ada lol, but he said something very interesting too. "It's all about problem solving. The skill to solve problems." reminds me of how designers are (or supposed to be) regarded as problem solvers.

Then it also got me thinking, Oh problem-solving is such a compelling trait to me. Like how I am adoring this Tan guy kedai radiator sebelah hari-hari baiki kereta rosak dan customer jadi sangat happy bila kereta dah baiki. Eh.

I like when people give out ideas and even more when they proved they can solve things. Like, so heroic/heroinic(?). Alah hatta benda kecik je. Macam jawab teka teki dengan betul.

Wuih. Panjang beno ni.

Melalut, nak tulis lagi tapi Notes dah start hang.

My 2015 birthday outing.

Ayu's 2015 birthday outing

Qila's 2017 birthday outing?

2015. I remember masa ni we (esp Miah) were so intrigued tengok orang main dkt arcade ahah

(Aimi came with Angah and little Hafiyyy, had to leave earlier)

Aimi, Qila and  Ayu just finished their final submission for the semester. Masing-masing sekarang housemates and studio-mates doing their Masters dkt UiTM. Miah just got back from the UK, obtained her Masters from LJMU, alhamdulillah. I, incidentally had to be in KL once again for another TFM screening.
THIS IS IT. THIS IS A PERFECT TIME. MUST, MEET, UP!

While I'm currently running away from most other people, ziz lavlehss, ziz, can't miss the chance berjumpa. Walaupun memang penat UKCG, but man, who am I kidding, this is one of my charging docks!

Secara praktikalnya, depa nilah teman sebilik, teman setidur, I mean teman tak tidur, started way back since CFS. And all of them taking Architecture after foundation while I went for arts and design, means they graduated their Part 1 one year earlier than I did my degree. I have to admit, from my previous posts, indeed my final year was the...loneliest. I felt the loss. They came for my birthday, yes, occasionally checking up on me but blergh, memang tak sama lah.

Catching up berjam-jam lamanya melepet dan (almost) non-stop tambah air dan dipping sauces.. sampailah Along call, tiba masanya untuk pulang ke Penang..

Terima kasih. Moga masing-masing berjaya dalam jalan yang dipilih. Until we meet again.

Other people may have only seen the groomed ready-to-face-the-world version, but I can tell you these lovelies have seen the vulnerable behind-the-scene version of me, of one another.

My studio-mates have only known about the convocation awards on that day itself, while these people knew it months earlier. They weren't there to celebrate physically but their encouragement really lifted me up.

Jadi, tipulah kalau tak terkesan menghabiskan baki setahun tanpa these familiar faces.

"I'm so glad I got to meet you today."
"So glad to meet you too."

"Don't feel down to be the best! That's what you are destined to do and don't let other people drag you down, go on at your own pace, you are an individual with aims and feelings. Do what you think is right, and just share your success and happiness without the need to hold back." TATJ, 2017.
